Dialer Tone

"Dil se dil tak baat pahunchi"-the dialer tone she had got so used to, rang like a cacophonous laughter". He cleared his throat before picking up the phone, happy that he won yet another ego battle!!

Her voice was dim and sober. “I have told mom”, was all that she could mumble. He wasn’t ready for this, yet just said “What now?”
“We would not talk anymore. That probably, is the best way forward for us”. He could hear her sobbing silently. Tears welled up in his eyes, how he can let her go. How can he erase 7 years of memories? He knew he would be able to work this out again but said “We will talk tomorrow”.
She cut the phone. He knew it would all be right tomorrow when as usual she would wake him up in the morning.
It was 9’O clock when the call came. The lady at the other end reminded him about his outstanding phone bill. He cut the phone saying he will be doing it today. There were no messages or missed calls in his cell. He hurriedly dialed her number; “The Airtel customer you are trying to reach is not available at the moment” answered the computerised response at the other end. “Ohh, she is still angry”, he thought. But it was more than that. Her number never worked again.
He also did not receive an answer to any of the mails he sent, and after three days the mails started bouncing. He was shattered. Only if he could go back and change his “We will talk tomorrow” statement, he cried like he had never done before. More than the pangs of losing something so dear was the fact that he could have so easily avoided it.
She lay silently staring at her phone. She had changed her number yet somehow wished he would call on this number. An unbearable loneliness filled her heart and she cried yet again. Only if he had understood that night, that there might be no tomorrow if he misses this chance...

Ever noticed how common it is to empathize or relate to a sad story...as if a common thread runs through all our lives

It's not a thread, it's a thick rope that binds us tight.
